"According to self-representationalism, whatever else a conscious experience represents, it always also represents itself; and it is in virtue of thus representing itself that it is conscious. On this view, then, all and only conscious states are self-representing. For example, when you sit in the tub and consciously stare at your toes, it is true both that you are aware of the toes, and that you are aware (though more dimly) of your visual experience of the toes. According to the self-representationalist, this is because your conscious experience at the time represents both your toes and itself."
