IT'S THE STORY OF THE WORLD
IN BLACK AND WHITE

for David Brooks and David Hume

As I commuted today
through a freshly commuted kangaroo, I thought:

David won't mind me writing about
the world
though you're not meant to
though you're meant to say
daffodils or
puke or
maybe narrative
though I make a worse-than-usual mess of the
form.

And I thought:

here's what the canon didn't tell us, David,
before you, Pope, Pound, Kurt
Vonnegut.

The world
is animal, not even
as human as physics.

And I thought:

it can all be analysed
it can all be analysed
and it's not quite exactly (though
who could ever mean exactly?)
that the world can make
sense but
it can all be analysed

except for that roo's
except for everyone's
inner remainder that you ache
towards.
